Our NotebookLM review for 2026: pros and cons, a 7.6/10 scorecard, a 13% error rate vs about 40% for chatbots in one study, and who it's worth it for.

Is Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) actually good, or just popular? It’s certainly popular. However, popularity won’t tell you whether it fits your work. So for this review we went through Google’s documentation, the plan limits and an independent accuracy study, then scored it. Below you’ll find the strengths, five real weaknesses, our ratings and a plain answer on who should use it.

Key Takeaways

  • In one 2025 study, it hallucinated in 13% of outputs vs about 40% for ChatGPT and Gemini (Hagar et al., 2025).
  • The free tier is generous: 100 notebooks, 50 sources each.
  • Weak spots: no per-notebook export, no consumer API, hard-to-predict limits.
  • Our own overall score: 7.6 out of 10.

Is Gemini Notebook good?

Yes, for one job in particular: answering questions from documents you choose, with citations. Gemini Notebook is Google’s source-grounded research app, and more than 30 million people and over 600,000 organizations use it (Google, 2026). Our own score is 7.6 out of 10. It’s excellent at grounded answers and study outputs. However, it’s weak at getting your work back out.

Best for: students, researchers and analysts who work from a fixed set of sources. Not ideal for: open-ended writing, one big knowledge base or automated pipelines. Price: free, with paid tiers through Google AI plans and Workspace.

Pros: what Gemini Notebook does well

Three things stand out: the range of outputs, a generous free tier and grounded chat. The free Standard tier gives you 100 notebooks with 50 sources each (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026). Each source can run to 500,000 words or 200MB (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026). Notably, the Studio is the real draw. From one set of sources you can make Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, mind maps, reports, flashcards, quizzes, infographics and slide decks. Additionally, it takes almost anything, such as PDFs, Word files, Google Docs, Slides and Sheets, web pages, public YouTube videos, audio files and ebooks. In addition, notebooks on Google AI Ultra and Workspace get a secure cloud computer that writes and runs code on your sources (Google, 2026), and Gemini Notebook’s official X account says that upgraded notebook is on all Pro accounts too (Gemini Notebook on X, 2026).

How accurate are Gemini Notebook’s answers?

More accurate than general chatbots, in an independent 2025 study. On a reporting task over 300 documents, NotebookLM hallucinated in 13% of outputs, against about 40% for ChatGPT and Gemini (Hagar et al., 2025). The paper was accepted to the Computation + Journalism Symposium 2025. Interpretive overconfidence means a model sticks to your sources but reads more into them than they say, and the authors found it was the main problem, not invented facts. For example, a model might turn a senator’s opinion from a hearing into a plain fact. In fact, across all three tools, 30% of outputs had at least one hallucination. In other words, grounding cuts errors without removing them. Therefore, here’s a practical rule. Trust Gemini Notebook on what a source says, and double-check it on what a source means.

Cons: where does Gemini Notebook fall short?

We count five real gaps, and people in the Kortex MCP waitlist survey name the same ones. We analyzed 776 Kortex MCP waitlist answers from September and October 2026, and we found 121 people asking for help tidying their library and 72 wanting notes and outputs back out. In addition, 32 asked for a real API. The gap that bites hardest, though, is permanent: “there’s currently no way to recover deleted notes” (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026). Here are all five:

1. No per-notebook export. In the app, you can export a note to Google Docs or Sheets (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026), download a slide deck or a flashcard CSV, and save audio files. However, from our research into Google’s help pages while fact-checking this review, no button saves one notebook’s sources or chats. Whole-account backups do exist. Specifically, Workspace admins can export chat history, uploads, notes and audio with the Data Export tool (Google Workspace Admin Help, 2026). Personal accounts, meanwhile, can export a snapshot through Google Takeout (Android Police, 2025). Our export guide shows the workarounds.

2. No public API for personal accounts. In fact, the only official API belongs to Gemini Notebook Enterprise on Google Cloud, under pre-GA terms (Google Cloud documentation, 2026).

3. Limits you can’t count in advance. Usage is compute-based and refreshes every five hours until a weekly limit. In other words, what a request costs depends on prompt complexity, the models and features you use, and chat length (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026). Our usage limits guide explains how to stretch them.

4. Notebooks are islands. A notebook’s chat only draws on that notebook’s sources. The Gemini app can pull several notebooks into one chat as a workaround (9to5Google, 2025). Nevertheless, the Studio works one notebook at a time.

5. Deleted notes are gone. Delete one by mistake and there’s no undo.

Our Gemini Notebook review scorecard

These are the Kortex team’s own ratings, based on Google’s documentation and one independent study (Hagar et al., 2025). We weighted accuracy most, because grounded answers are the core reason to use it. Importantly, we also make an extension that adds export and organization, so weigh those two scores with that in mind. Each area gets a score out of 10 and a weight. The total is the weighted sum.

Is Gemini Notebook worth paying for?

Only if you hit the limits. Paid tiers mostly buy headroom: AI Plus gets 2x the standard usage, AI Pro 4x and AI Ultra 5x or 20x AI Pro (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026). In addition, Pro lifts you from 50 to 300 sources per notebook, and from 100 to 500 notebooks. The Ultra figure in the table below is our maths, not Google’s. Specifically, Ultra is 5x or 20x Pro, and Pro is 4x standard, so Ultra works out to 20x or 80x the free allowance. For students, however, the best deal is free. Google lists AI Pro at $19.99 a month, and eligible US college students get a year free if they redeem by December 31, 2026 (Google, 2026). Compare tiers in our Gemini Notebook plans guide.

Who should use it, and who should look elsewhere?

Use it if your work starts from a pile of documents you trust.

Good fit:

  • Students revising from lecture notes, slides and readings
  • Researchers and analysts working through reports, papers or transcripts
  • Teams on Google Workspace who want cited answers from shared documents
  • Anyone who’d rather listen to their reading as an Audio Overview

Look elsewhere if:

  • You mostly want a general writing or coding assistant. Our Gemini Notebook vs ChatGPT comparison explains the split.
  • You want one knowledge base that links every note and file you own.
  • You need an API or scripted workflows on a personal account.

How does Kortex fill Gemini Notebook’s gaps?

Kortex is a Chrome extension with 100,000+ users (Kortex, 2026), and we built it for the weak spots in this review, not the strengths. For example, it downloads every source in a notebook as PDF, Markdown, text or ZIP, exports every Studio note and artifact at once, and saves chats whole or reply by reply. Since deleted notes can’t come back, a regular export is cheap insurance. Similarly, for the islands problem, it adds collections, tags and search across every notebook, plus, on Pro, source diffs and merges between notebooks.

What about the API gap? That’s Kortex MCP, included with Kortex Pro and Lifetime. With Pro or Lifetime, paste https://mcp.kortex-notebooklm.com/mcp into Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code or another MCP client. Your assistant then gets 145+ notebook tools (Kortex MCP docs, 2026). Each call is relayed to your own Kortex extension, which talks to Gemini Notebook with the Google session you already have. Consequently, Chrome needs to be running with the extension signed in, and Kortex never stores your Google password or cookies. That said, Kortex has a free plan. Pro costs $9.99 a month or $4.92 a month billed yearly, and MCP comes with Pro and Lifetime.

Gemini Notebook earns its reputation for cited answers, and Kortex covers the gaps this review found.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gemini Notebook worth it?

Yes, for answering questions from sources you choose. In a 2025 study, it hallucinated in 13% of outputs, against about 40% for ChatGPT and Gemini, and its Studio turns sources into audio, video, quizzes and slides. Its weak spots are export, cross-notebook organization and predictable limits. The Kortex team scores it 7.6 out of 10.

How accurate is Gemini Notebook?

More accurate than general chatbots for document work, in one study. On a reporting task over 300 documents, NotebookLM hallucinated in 13% of outputs, against about 40% for ChatGPT and Gemini. Its typical mistake was interpretive overconfidence, reading more into a source than it says, so click the citation behind any conclusion you’ll repeat.

Is Gemini Notebook free?

Yes. The free Standard tier includes 100 notebooks with 50 sources each, and each source can hold up to 500,000 words or 200MB. Usage limits are compute-based and refresh every five hours until a weekly cap. Paid plans raise that: Plus gets 2x the standard allowance, Pro 4x.

Is Gemini Notebook better than ChatGPT?

For questions about your own documents, usually yes. In one 2025 study on a 300-document task, it hallucinated in 13% of outputs against about 40% for ChatGPT. ChatGPT is broader for general writing, coding and open-ended questions. You can use both: ChatGPT to draft, Gemini Notebook to check claims against your sources.

What are the biggest drawbacks of Gemini Notebook?

Five stand out. There’s no per-notebook export for sources or chats, no public API for personal accounts, and compute-based limits that are hard to predict. Each notebook’s chat only sees its own sources. And deleted notes can’t be recovered, so keeping your own copies of important work matters.

Who should not use Gemini Notebook?

People who mainly want a general writing or coding assistant, a personal knowledge base that links every note they own, or an API for automated workflows on a personal account. Gemini Notebook works best when you start from a set of documents, up to 50 per notebook on the free plan.
