NotebookLM Plus vs Pro vs Ultra: Google AI Plus costs $4.99, Pro $19.99 and Ultra from $99.99 a month in the US. Compare sources, usage, models and extras.

Gemini Notebook is free, so why does the usage warning keep offering you an Upgrade button? Paying buys four things: bigger notebooks, more usage before the five-hour window closes, better Gemini models across Google’s apps, and a few extras like watermark-free video. It doesn’t, however, buy a different product. Here’s Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) Plus vs Pro vs Ultra: what each Google AI plan adds, what it costs in the US, and how to choose.

Key Takeaways

  • In the US, Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month, Pro $19.99 and Ultra from $99.99 (Google, 2026).
  • Plus doubles free capacity to 200 notebooks and 100 sources.
  • Pro adds 300 sources, 4x usage, watermark removal and Live Voice Chat.
  • In the Gemini app, Plus gets Flash; Pro and Ultra add the Pro model and Gemini 4 Argon.
  • Ultra suits 500-600 sources and heavy daily use.

How much does Gemini Notebook cost in 2026?

Gemini Notebook itself is free. Paid tiers come inside Google AI plans. Google AI Plus is the cheapest paid plan. In the US, Google lists it at $4.99 a month, Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month and Google AI Ultra from $99.99 a month (Google, 2026). Pro also comes at $199.99 a year (Google One, 2026). Ultra has two tiers: $99.99 for 5x Pro’s usage and $199.99 for 20x. Prices vary by country, and older articles may quote $7.99 for Plus or $249.99 for Ultra, which were earlier US prices.

Plus vs Pro vs Ultra: how many sources does each allow?

Capacity is the clearest difference. The free tier holds 100 notebooks with 50 sources each, Plus 200 with 100, Pro 500 with 300, and the two Ultra tiers 500 notebooks with 500 or 600 sources (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026). Sharing a notebook, however, doesn’t raise any collaborator’s source limit. Usage is the other lever. Compute-based limits are how consumer accounts are metered: they refresh every five hours until a weekly cap, and each plan multiplies the standard allowance (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026). Here’s how both levers line up.

PlanNotebooksSources per notebookUsage
Free10050Standard.
Plus2001002x standard.
Pro5003004x standard.
Ultra 5x (20 TB)5005005x Pro.
Ultra 20x (30 TB)50060020x Pro.

Our usage limits guide explains what eats into the allowance fastest.

Set the US prices beside those multipliers and a pattern shows. Plus costs about $2.50 per “free allowance” of usage ($4.99 for 2x), and so does Ultra 20x ($199.99 for roughly 80x). Pro and Ultra 5x, in contrast, both work out near $5.00. As a result, Pro isn’t the cheapest way to buy raw usage; you’re paying for its room and extras. That said, storage and the Gemini app come bundled too, so treat this as a Gemini Notebook lens only.

Which Gemini models come with each Google AI plan?

In the Gemini app, the plan decides your model menu. Google’s help center lists Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro by plan, and its plan page adds Gemini 4 Argon, Google’s frontier model, for Pro and Ultra (Gemini Apps Help, 2026; Google, 2026). The context window, meaning how much of your files and chat Gemini can read at once, grows with the plan as well (Gemini Apps Help, 2026).

PlanGemini app modelsContext window
No planAuto: most prompts go to Flash-Lite, some to Flash or Pro32k tokens
PlusFlash-Lite and Flash128k tokens
ProFlash-Lite, Flash, Pro and Gemini 4 Argon1 million tokens
UltraThe same four, with the highest access1 million tokens

Turn off smart model selection on the free tier and every answer uses Flash-Lite. Each available model also has a low, medium or high effort setting, and higher effort uses more of your limit (Gemini Apps Help, 2026). The plan gates Gemini app features too: Daily Brief, scheduled actions and video generation start at Plus, and Tasks in Gemini starts at Pro.

Gemini Notebook works differently. Its plan table only says “Access”, “Higher access” or “Highest access to Gemini models”, and Google names a version, Gemini 3.5 with Antigravity, for Ultra alone (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026). Our post on which model Gemini Notebook uses covers what each tier runs and whether Argon is involved.

What do Pro and Ultra add over Plus?

Most extras start at Pro. Google’s consumer plan table reserves visible-watermark removal for Pro and Ultra, gives advanced sharing to every paid plan, and ranks early access to features as Early on Plus and Priority on Pro and Ultra (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026). Live Voice Chat is a spoken back-and-forth with your notebook in the mobile app, for users 18+, and it’s on Ultra and Pro (Google, 2026; Gemini Notebook on X, 2026). Using a notebook as a source in Google Docs, by typing @ in the Gemini panel, is on Pro and Ultra too (Google Workspace Updates, 2026). Here’s the split.

PlanWatermark removalAdvanced sharingLive Voice ChatNotebooks in Google Docs
FreeNoNoNot listedNo.
PlusNoYesNot listedNo.
ProYesYesYesYes.
UltraYesYesYesYes.

Notice what the consumer table leaves out: per-feature counts. It doesn’t list Deep Research runs or cinematic Video Overviews by plan, since the compute-based allowance decides how far a day goes, and Google labels its figures “subject to change”. The Workspace table still lists counts, which make a useful guide. At Higher level access, the Pro equivalent, it’s 20 Deep Research runs and 20 Video Overviews a day, 2 of them cinematic (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026). In addition, custom chat and analytics are free for everyone, so don’t upgrade for those alone.

Watermarks, notably, have a regional catch. Pro and Ultra get a “Visible watermarking” toggle under your profile picture, but Google still applies a visible watermark if you live in India, South Korea or Vietnam. Making videos? Read our Video Overviews guide first, and our Deep Research guide if research runs are your bottleneck. See how to turn off the Gemini Notebook watermark for the toggle and what stays behind.

Is Gemini Notebook Pro worth it over free?

For most students and casual researchers, no. The free tier already has 100 notebooks of 50 sources each, plus Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, flashcards and the rest of the Studio panel at standard limits (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026). Pro earns its $19.99 a month only when you need 100+ sources, watermark-free videos or more usage most days. In other words, Pro solves three specific problems, and three questions settle whether you have them:

  • Do you keep hitting the 50-source cap? Plus fixes that for a quarter of Pro’s price.
  • Do you publish what you make? Pro removes the visible watermark, outside India, South Korea and Vietnam.
  • Do you see “Limit reached” most days? Pro’s 4x allowance is double what Plus gets.

Answered no to all three? Stay free. Our explainer on whether Gemini Notebook is free shows how far $0 goes, and the Upgrade button is always there the day you hit a wall. Why pay for headroom you might never use? Staying free works best, however, when your notebooks stay findable and you never redo work you’ve already done.

How do you get Gemini Notebook Plus or Pro?

You can upgrade without leaving the app. Google’s steps are to open Gemini Notebook, select Upgrade in chat or in a Studio generation, and follow the on-screen instructions (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026). Notably, only personal Google accounts can buy Google AI plans, so work and school accounts go through an admin (Google One, 2026). Here’s the whole route, start to finish:

  1. Open notebook.google.com with the personal account that owns your notebooks.
  2. Select Upgrade in the chat or in a Studio generation, or pick a plan on Google’s AI plans page.
  3. Choose Plus, Pro or Ultra and finish checkout.
  4. Look for a Plus, Pro or Ultra badge next to your profile picture.
  5. Open Settings, then Usage, to see your new allowance.

Students, in particular, should check the free offers first. Eligible US college students can claim a free year of Google AI Pro until December 31, 2026, and students in more than 140 other markets get a free year of Google AI Plus (Google, 2026). Our guide to free Gemini Notebook for students covers who qualifies and where.

How do Workspace and Enterprise plans compare?

Work and school accounts upgrade through their organization’s license, not Google One. Google sorts Workspace editions into access levels, and Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus sit at “Higher level access”, with 500 notebooks and 300 sources per notebook (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026). Schools, similarly, get the free level in every Workspace for Education edition, and Google lists Google AI Pro for Education with “Up to 500 notebooks, each with 300 sources, as well as 500 daily chat queries” (Google for Education, 2026).

Workspace licenseGemini Notebook levelConsumer match
Business Starter, Enterprise Essentials, Education Fundamentals or StandardStandard accessFree.

Business Standard or Plus, Enterprise Standard or Plus, Google AI Pro for EducationHigher level accessPro.
AI Expanded Access add-onExpanded level accessBetween Pro and Ultra.
AI Ultra Access add-onHighest level accessUltra 30 TB.

Read Google’s two plan tables side by side and Higher level access matches Pro on both numbers the consumer table lists, 500 notebooks and 300 sources. The Workspace table then adds the per-feature counts: 500 chats, 20 Audio Overviews and 20 Deep Research runs a day (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026). A Business Standard seat, in other words, already includes Pro-level Gemini Notebook.

Additionally, core-service editions get enterprise-grade privacy: uploads, chats and outputs aren’t reviewed by humans or used to improve generative AI models (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026). For tighter control, Gemini Notebook for Enterprise is sold on Google Cloud at $9 per license per month after a 30-day trial, with a 15-license minimum (Google Cloud, 2026). Files stay inside your Cloud project (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026). Our Gemini Notebook for business guide compares both routes.

Which Gemini Notebook plan should you buy?

Match the plan to your bottleneck. The free tier caps each notebook at 50 sources and Plus at 100 (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026). If your first wall is space rather than features, for example the 50-source cap, the cheapest plan that removes it is usually the right one. Importantly, upgrade one step at a time. If Pro’s allowance still runs dry, for instance, Ultra 5x is the next rung, and it costs five times as much. Here’s the short version.

We analyzed 1,451 Google autocomplete suggestions for Kortex blog topics in October 2026, and the plan searches alone included “plus vs pro”, “pro vs free” and “pro free for students”, so you’re not the only one weighing this. Why pay $99.99 before you’ve hit Pro’s ceiling even once?

How does Kortex fit with a paid Gemini Notebook plan?

Kortex is a free Chrome extension for Gemini Notebook, and we built it, so take this section as the maker’s view. It doesn’t change Google’s limits, but it makes any plan easier to live with. Its free plan includes 10 exports and 10 imports a day, and Pro costs $9.99 a month or $4.92 a month billed yearly (Kortex pricing, 2026). Kortex’s own limits, however, are separate from Google’s. It covers jobs the plans don’t, such as keeping notebooks findable and outputs saved. Collections and tags, for example, keep hundreds of notebooks in order, and export saves sources, notes and chats as PDF, Markdown, text or ZIP, so you don’t regenerate what you already made. A saved prompt library, meanwhile, cuts retries. See how it layers onto Google’s app in Kortex vs Gemini Notebook.

Kortex Pro also includes Kortex MCP. It lets Claude or ChatGPT ask your notebooks and bring back cited answers, using whatever Gemini Notebook plan you already have.

Pick the plan that fixes your real bottleneck, then make every notebook go further.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Gemini Notebook cost?

Gemini Notebook itself is free with a Google account. Paid tiers come bundled with Google AI plans: in the US, $4.99 a month for Plus, $19.99 for Pro, and $99.99 or $199.99 for the two Ultra tiers (Google, 2026). Prices vary by country, so check Google’s plans page.

What is the difference between Gemini Notebook Plus and Pro?

Plus doubles free capacity to 200 notebooks with 100 sources each and gives 2x the standard usage. Pro raises that to 500 notebooks, 300 sources and 4x usage, and adds visible watermark removal, Live Voice Chat on mobile and notebooks as a source in Google Docs. In the Gemini app, Plus gets Flash-Lite and Flash, while Pro adds the Pro model and Gemini 4 Argon.

Is Gemini Notebook Pro worth it?

Only if you hit a wall. Pro makes sense when notebooks need more than 100 sources, when you publish videos without a watermark, or when the five-hour usage window runs out most days. If you just need bigger notebooks, Plus lifts the 50-source cap for a quarter of the price.

What is the difference between Gemini Notebook Pro and Ultra?

Ultra adds room and usage on top of Pro. Pro holds 300 sources per notebook, while Ultra holds 500 on the 20 TB plan and 600 on the 30 TB plan. Ultra usage is 5x or 20x Pro’s, and Ultra is the one plan Google names a Gemini Notebook model for: Gemini 3.5. All three allow 500 notebooks.

Which Gemini models does each Google AI plan get?

In the Gemini app, the free tier uses Auto, which sends most prompts to Flash-Lite and some to Flash or Pro. Plus gets Flash-Lite and Flash, and Pro and Ultra get Flash-Lite, Flash, Pro and Gemini 4 Argon. Inside Gemini Notebook, Google names a model only for Ultra: Gemini 3.5.

How do I upgrade Gemini Notebook?

Open Gemini Notebook, select Upgrade in the chat or in a Studio generation, and follow the on-screen steps. You can also subscribe on Google’s AI plans page. Only personal Google accounts can buy these plans, so work and school users need their admin to assign a qualifying license.

Can I get Gemini Notebook Pro through Workspace or Google Cloud?

Yes. Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus include Gemini Notebook at Higher level access, with Pro’s 500 notebooks and 300 sources. On Google Cloud, Gemini Notebook for Enterprise costs $9 per license per month after a 30-day trial, with a 15-license minimum (Google Cloud, 2026).
