# Google Drive Markdown: AI Notes in Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM)

> Google Drive previews Markdown and Docs edits .md files without converting them. How it works, plus moving .md notes between NotebookLM, Obsidian and Claude.

By Juli · Published Oct 26, 2026 · https://www.kortex-notebooklm.com/blog/google-drive-markdown

Ask Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini for a summary and the reply comes back in Markdown: hash signs for headings, asterisks for bold, pipes for tables. Obsidian stores every note that way, and Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) accepts .md files as sources. **Google Drive Markdown** support is the piece that connects them: Drive previews .md files, and Google Docs edits them without converting them into Google Docs. This guide covers what Google supports, what it doesn't, and how to move Markdown between Drive, Obsidian, your AI assistant and Gemini Notebook.

> **Key Takeaways**
> - Drive previews .md files, and Docs opens them in Markdown Mode, where each file "stays an .md file, kept in Drive" (Google Docs Editors Help, 2026).
> - Docs also imports Markdown, downloads any Doc as .md, and copies and pastes Markdown once you tick Enable Markdown.
> - Gemini Notebook takes .md files as sources, and Google says Drive sources sync every few minutes.
> - Getting notes back out is the gap: natively, one note at a time through Google Docs.

## What does Google Drive Markdown support include?

Two separate features answer to "Markdown in Google Drive". **Markdown Mode** is the Docs editor for real .md files: the file stays Markdown, and you get comments, sharing and live co-editing on top. The **Markdown import and export options** are the conversion tools: they turn Markdown into a Google Doc, or a Google Doc into a .md download. Google calls Markdown "a standard text format widely used by Large Language Models (LLMs) to preserve structured data" ([Google Docs Editors Help](https://support.google.com/docs/answer/18289341?hl=en), 2026), which is why both matter for AI notes. Here's every Markdown job and where it happens.

| Job | Where | How | Still a .md file? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Read a .md file | Drive | Right-click, Open with, Preview | Yes |
| Edit, comment and share it | Docs, Markdown Mode | Double-click the file in Drive | Yes |
| Save a Google Doc as Markdown | Docs | File, Download, Markdown (.md) | A new .md copy |
| Turn Markdown into a Google Doc | Docs | Paste from Markdown, or File, Open, Upload | No, it becomes a Doc |
| Copy Doc text as Markdown | Docs | Enable Markdown, then right-click, Copy as Markdown | Clipboard only |

That split matches what people search for. When we pulled Google autocomplete for "google drive markdown" on October 26, 2026, it finished with viewer, editor, files, support and preview, while "markdown google docs" finished with import, mobile and "enable markdown google docs". The next two sections answer each set.

## How do you preview and edit Markdown files in Google Drive?

Preview from Drive, and edit in Docs. Both steps operate on the original .md file, so nothing gets converted along the way.

1. **Upload the .md file to Drive**, or let Drive for desktop sync it from your computer.
2. **Preview it.** Right-click the file, select Open with, then Preview. At the top of the viewer, switch between Markdown (the raw text) and Preview (the rendered page, with clickable links and formatted tables).
3. **Edit it.** Double-click the file, and it opens in Google Docs in Markdown Mode, marked by an .md tag beside the title.
4. **Share and comment** as you would on any Doc. Google says your comments and formatting are kept when you reopen the file in Docs "or in other tools" (Google Docs Editors Help, 2026).

Google is clear on the key point: "Your file does not convert to a Google Docs file. It stays an .md file, kept in Drive." As a result, the file your AI assistant wrote and the file your team comments on are the same file.

### What changes when you edit a .md file in Docs?

Anything Markdown can't represent. Google lists three changes: smart chips turn into text or links, web (.HTML) formatting becomes plain text, and font colors, highlights and text alignment are removed (Google Docs Editors Help, 2026). If an edit strips something you needed, File, then Version history restores the earlier version. Google's page doesn't mention syntax that only some apps use, such as Obsidian's double-bracket links or callouts, so open a copy first if your notes rely on them.

### Who has Markdown Mode?

Google lists it for all Google Workspace customers and for personal Google accounts, with no admin control and no user setting ([Google Workspace Updates](https://workspaceupdates.googleblog.com/2026/10/preview-edit-and-collaborate-on-Markdown-files-natively-across-Drive-and-Docs.html), 2026). If double-clicking a .md file doesn't show the .md tag, your account doesn't have Markdown Mode, and the import route below works either way.

## How do you import and export Markdown in Google Docs?

Use the File menu for whole documents and the right-click menu for selections. These tools convert, so they suit a one-way trip: Markdown into a Google Doc, or a Google Doc out to Markdown. Import and export are on by default for Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers and personal accounts ([Google Workspace Updates](https://workspaceupdates.googleblog.com/2024/07/import-and-export-markdown-in-google-docs.html), 2024).

- **Export a Doc as Markdown:** File, Download, Markdown (.md). You get a .md file on your computer.
- **Paste Markdown as formatting:** copy Markdown text, then right-click in a Doc and choose Paste from Markdown. Headings, bold and links arrive as real Docs formatting.
- **Copy a Doc as Markdown:** select the text, right-click, Copy as Markdown.
- **Import a .md file as a Doc:** in Docs, File, Open, Upload. Google's Markdown page also says to right-click an uploaded file in Drive and choose Open with, Google Docs ([Google Docs Editors Help](https://support.google.com/docs/answer/12014036?hl=en), 2026).

That last step is where Google's two pages differ. The general Markdown page still describes opening a .md file from Drive as importing it into a Doc, while the Markdown Mode page says double-clicking keeps it a .md file. We follow the Markdown Mode page, because it describes the dedicated .md editor. If you want a true Google Doc, with smart chips and colors, Paste from Markdown into a blank Doc is the dependable route.

### What does "Enable Markdown" do?

It's one checkbox under Tools, then Preferences, in Docs, Slides and Drawings. Ticked, it turns typed Markdown into formatting: a `#` and a space at the start of a line makes a heading in Docs, `**text**` makes bold, `~text~` makes strikethrough, and `[text](link)` makes a link (Google Docs Editors Help, 2026). Google's announcement adds that Copy as Markdown and Paste from Markdown are off by default and switch on with this box (Google Workspace Updates, 2024). By contrast, Markdown Mode and Download as Markdown don't need it.

## Why does Markdown in Drive matter for AI notes?

Because it makes Drive a shared folder that every tool in an AI notes setup can read. **Markdown** is plain text with light formatting marks, so the same file opens in Obsidian, renders in Drive, edits in Docs and loads into Gemini Notebook as a source. Obsidian "stores your notes as Markdown-formatted plain text files in a vault" ([Obsidian Help](https://obsidian.md/help/data-storage), 2026). Gemini Notebook lists Markdown (md) among its supported files ([Gemini Notebook Help](https://support.google.com/gemininotebook/answer/16215270?hl=en), 2026). In addition, the Gemini app can generate a Markdown file from a chat and export it to Drive ([Google](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/products/gemini-app/generate-files-in-gemini/), 2026).

Formatting isn't decoration to a language model, either. In one study, researchers wrote the same prompts as plain text, Markdown, JSON and YAML. On a code translation task, GPT-3.5-turbo's performance varied by up to 40% with the template, while larger models such as GPT-4 were "more robust to these variations" ([He et al., arXiv](https://arxiv.org/abs/2411.10541), 2024). No single format won everywhere in that study, so the lesson isn't that Markdown always wins. It's that format changes what a model gets. Markdown is also the one format every tool in this chain shares, so headings and tables survive each hop instead of flattening into plain text.

Moving files in and out is a real need, not a niche one. We analyzed the 776 answers to the Kortex MCP waitlist survey, then in private beta, in September and October 2026. Of those 776 respondents, 76 asked to bring files from Drive and disk into their notebooks. Separately, 72 of the 776 asked to get notes and outputs back out.

One respondent put the round trip this way: "I manually export or copy the content and reorganize it into my local Obsidian vault". Markdown in Drive helps with the filing half of that trip, because an exported .md file can land in a vault folder that Drive, Docs and Gemini Notebook all read. The export half needs a tool, and the sections below cover both.

## How do you use Markdown files from Drive in Gemini Notebook?

Import them as sources, straight from Drive. Gemini Notebook's help page says "you can import supported files from your Google Drive", one or several at a time, and Markdown is on the supported list (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026).

1. **Open a notebook** at notebook.google.com and select Add sources.
2. **Choose Google Drive** and pick your .md files. You need at least view access to each one.
3. **Edit the file anywhere.** Google says sources imported from Drive "are auto-updated and will sync every few minutes".
4. **Force a refresh** when you can't wait: open the source and select "Click to sync with Google Drive".

If a .md file doesn't appear in the Drive picker, download it and upload it as a file instead; the source just won't sync. Google's page doesn't list sync exceptions by file type, so check the source after your first edit. Also, Gemini Notebook "can't delete or edit your original files in Drive", and it doesn't import comments from Google files. If you delete a file in Drive, its source becomes inaccessible but still counts toward your source limit.

<!-- [UNIQUE INSIGHT] -->
**Merge small notes before you import.** Each file is one source. The free plan allows 50 sources per notebook, Plus 100 and Pro 300 ([Gemini Notebook Help](https://support.google.com/gemininotebook/answer/16213268?hl=en), 2026), and each source can hold up to 500,000 words. For example, a vault of 400 short notes won't fit in one free notebook, but one Markdown file per topic will. That's our reading of the limits, not a Google recommendation, and it costs you per-note citations, since Gemini Notebook then cites the merged file.

### Can an Obsidian vault live in Google Drive?

Yes on Windows, macOS and Android, with care. Obsidian's help lists those three as recommended systems for Google Drive, but says Drive is "not officially supported for syncing Obsidian vaults", and on iOS it suggests other options ([Obsidian Help](https://obsidian.md/help/sync-notes), 2026). The setup is short: install Drive for desktop, create a vault folder inside Google Drive, and open that folder as a vault in Obsidian. Obsidian adds two tips. Set the vault files to "Available Offline" in Drive, and don't sync the same vault through two services at once, which it warns can cause "data conflicts or corruption". Once the vault is in Drive, its notes preview in Drive, open in Markdown Mode and import into Gemini Notebook like any other .md file. Our comparison of [Gemini Notebook and Obsidian](/blog/gemini-notebook-vs-obsidian) covers which app should hold what.

## How do you get Gemini Notebook notes back out as Markdown?

Natively, one note at a time. Gemini Notebook exports a single note to Google Docs, and edits there "will not synchronize with your original Gemini Notebook note" ([Gemini Notebook Help](https://support.google.com/gemininotebook/answer/16262519?hl=en), 2026). From that Doc, File, Download, Markdown (.md) gives you the file. Google documents no native export for sources or chats, so the route for a whole notebook is copy and paste.

**Kortex** is a free Chrome extension for Gemini Notebook, with 100,000+ users, and we built it, so weigh this section accordingly. It adds export buttons inside the notebook:

- **Sources:** every source in the notebook as Markdown, PDF, text or a ZIP, from one button above the sources panel.
- **Studio:** every note and artifact at once, as Markdown, PDF or a ZIP.
- **Chats:** the whole conversation, or only the replies you tick, as Markdown, text, PDF or JSON. Copying a chat as Markdown is free and doesn't count toward a limit.

Unzip the Markdown export into your vault folder in Drive, and every note previews in Drive, opens in Markdown Mode and shows up in Obsidian. Kortex doesn't export to Google Docs or Word; Markdown and PDF are its formats. Our guide to [exporting Gemini Notebook](/blog/export-gemini-notebook) covers every native and Kortex route in detail.

## How do you move Markdown between Claude, ChatGPT and Drive?

Pick the route by where the text starts. Google calls Markdown a format widely used by LLMs, but each assistant reaches Drive differently, so check what yours can actually read.

- **From the Gemini app:** ask for a Markdown file. Gemini generates Markdown (MD) files, among other formats, and for most formats you can download the file or export it to Drive (Google, 2026).
- **From Claude or ChatGPT:** ask for the answer in Markdown, then paste it into a Doc with Paste from Markdown, or save it as a .md file in your Drive folder.
- **From any chat straight into a notebook:** Kortex adds a button inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity that sends the chat to a notebook as a source, with prompts and replies labelled. Send it again later and Kortex updates that source instead of adding a copy.

One catch on the reading side: Anthropic's page for Claude's Google Drive connector lists Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDFs, Office files, OpenDocument files and images, but not .md or plain text files ([Claude docs](https://claude.com/docs/connectors/google/drive), 2026). Instead, Google Docs you add from Drive reach Claude "converted to Markdown". So if Claude should read a note through Drive, a Google Doc is the documented format, while Gemini Notebook takes the .md file directly.

For a hands-off version, Kortex MCP works as a bridge. Your AI client reaches Drive or your vault folder with its own connector or file access. Kortex MCP then carries that content into Gemini Notebook, or pulls notebook notes out as Markdown for the client to save. The client does the Drive part; Kortex MCP doesn't reach into Drive itself. Kortex MCP is included with Kortex Pro and Lifetime, and our guide to [saving Gemini Notebook notes to Notion and Obsidian](/blog/gemini-notebook-to-notion-obsidian) has the prompts.

In short, Drive reads and edits Markdown, Gemini Notebook takes it in, and getting it back out is the step to plan.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can Google Drive open Markdown files?

Yes. Right-click a .md file in Drive and choose Open with, then Preview, to see it rendered with clickable links and tables, and switch to the raw Markdown at the top of the viewer. Double-click it instead and it opens in Google Docs in Markdown Mode, where you can edit, comment and share it while it stays a .md file.

### Does Google Docs convert a .md file into a Google Doc?

Not in Markdown Mode. Google's help page says the file "does not convert to a Google Docs file" and stays a .md file in Drive. If you do want a regular Google Doc, paste the text into a new Doc with Paste from Markdown, or use the import steps on Google's Markdown page.

### How do I enable Markdown in Google Docs?

On a computer, open a Doc, go to Tools, then Preferences, and tick Enable Markdown. That turns on Markdown formatting as you type, and Google's announcement ties Copy as Markdown and Paste from Markdown to the same box. Markdown Mode for .md files has no setting, and Download as Markdown works without it.

### Can Gemini Notebook read Markdown files?

Yes. Markdown (.md) is on Google's list of supported source types for Gemini Notebook, next to Word, text, PDF, CSV and PowerPoint files. You can upload a .md file or import supported files from Google Drive, and Google says Drive sources update and sync every few minutes.

### Can I export Gemini Notebook notes as Markdown?

Natively, in two steps: export a note to Google Docs from its menu, then use File, Download, Markdown (.md) in Docs. Sources and chats have no native export. Kortex, a free Chrome extension, exports sources, notes and chats as Markdown, PDF, text or a ZIP in one click.

### Does Markdown work in the Google Docs mobile app?

Google doesn't document it. Its Markdown help pages describe right-click and menu steps on a computer, and neither mentions the Docs or Drive mobile apps. If you work on a phone, plan on doing Markdown jobs in Docs on a computer.
