# Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) vs Gemini: Which Wins?

> NotebookLM vs Gemini: Gemini answers from the web and its own knowledge, Gemini Notebook only from your sources. A 2025 test found 13% vs 40% error rates.

Gemini Notebook vs Gemini is a fair question: the two share a brand, a model family and even your notebooks. So which one should you open? In fact, they answer from different places. The Gemini app is a general assistant that searches the web, drafts files and runs Deep Research on almost anything. Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM, answers only from the sources you give it and cites each claim. Here's when each one wins, and how to use them together.

> **Key Takeaways**
> - The Gemini app is a general assistant for web answers, Deep Research and new files.
> - Gemini Notebook answers only from your sources and cites them inline.
> - In a 2025 test, NotebookLM hallucinated in 13% of outputs vs about 40% for Gemini ([Hagar et al.](https://arxiv.org/abs/2509.25498), 2025).
> - Explore in Gemini, then check and study in Gemini Notebook.

## What's the difference between Gemini and Gemini Notebook?

Gemini answers from its model, Google Search and your attachments, while Gemini Notebook answers only from the sources you add. Gemini Notebook is the product formerly called NotebookLM ([Google](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/products/gemini-notebook/notebooklm-gemini-notebook/), 2026), so the names blur together. The split itself is simple. **Gemini Notebook** is Google's source-grounded research app, built to give "grounded information based on your sources with clear in-line citations" ([Gemini Notebook Help](https://support.google.com/gemininotebook/answer/16164461?hl=en), 2026). The **Gemini app** is Google's general assistant for questions, drafts, files and Deep Research. Citations, in particular, work differently. The Gemini app shows a Sources button when it used links. However, Google notes that "not all responses include related links or sources" ([Gemini Apps Help](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/14143489?hl=en), 2026). A notebook, in contrast, is built the other way around. It's designed to answer from what you uploaded, so when the answer isn't in your sources, it may simply not answer.

Think of Gemini as a well-read generalist, and Gemini Notebook as an assistant who only reads the folder you hand over. Which one do you need right now? In other words, it depends on whether you already have the documents. People search this comparison in many forms. For example, when we analyzed 1,451 Google autocomplete suggestions for these topics in October 2026, "notebooklm vs gemini" came back with "for studying", "gems", "canvas" and "deep research" variants. For the basics, start with [what Gemini Notebook is](/blog/what-is-gemini-notebook).

## Is Gemini Notebook more accurate than Gemini?

For document work, Gemini Notebook. In a 2025 study accepted to the Computation + Journalism Symposium, researchers ran a reporting task over a 300-document corpus ([Hagar, Agustianto & Diakopoulos](https://arxiv.org/abs/2509.25498), 2025). NotebookLM hallucinated in 13% of outputs, versus about 40% for Gemini and ChatGPT, roughly three times as often. Importantly, all three tools got the same task and the same documents. The authors do warn that the tools differ in their models and in how they handle documents, which limits direct comparison. In fact, Gemini read every document in context, while the other two used retrieval. Most errors weren't invented names or numbers, either. The authors describe "interpretive overreach", where a model makes analytical claims the documents don't support. For instance, a senator's opinion from a hearing could turn into a plain fact.

So is the Gemini app careless? No, and two more caveats keep this fair. Specifically, the test used 2025 versions, and both apps change often. Additionally, 13% isn't zero, so click the citation before you quote anything. Our [Gemini Notebook vs ChatGPT comparison](/blog/notebooklm-vs-chatgpt) looks at the same grounding question from OpenAI's side.

## Gemini Notebook vs Gemini, side by side

The biggest practical gap is scale. A Gemini chat accepts up to 10 files per prompt, at up to 100 MB each ([Gemini Apps Help](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/14903178?hl=en), 2026). A free notebook, on the other hand, holds 50 sources, and each one can run to 500,000 words or 200MB ([Gemini Notebook Help](https://support.google.com/gemininotebook/answer/16215270?hl=en), 2026). Here's how the rest compares.

| | Gemini app | Gemini Notebook |
|---|---|---|
| Answers come from | Its model, Google Search and your attachments | Only the sources in the notebook |
| Citations | A Sources button on some responses | Inline citations on answers |
| Files | Up to 10 per prompt, 100 MB each, videos up to 2 GB | 50 sources free, up to 600 on Ultra |
| How much it reads | 1M tokens, about 1,500 pages, on AI Pro and Ultra | Searches the sources you select for each answer |
| Web research | Deep Research, with Google Search on by default | Fast Research and Deep Research import web sources |
| What it makes | Chat answers, Canvas, and files like Docs, Sheets and PDFs | Studio: Audio and Video Overviews, Mind Maps, Reports, Flashcards, Quizzes, Slide Decks, Infographics |
| Best for | Open questions, drafting, current events | Research and study against your own documents |

<!-- [ORIGINAL DATA] -->
Run the numbers and the gap gets clearer. A free notebook can hold 50 sources at 500,000 words each, which is 25 million words on paper. In contrast, a paid Gemini chat with a 1M-token window reads about 1,500 pages at once, and free accounts get a smaller standard window (Gemini Apps Help, 2026). The notebook doesn't read all 25 million words for every question, though. Instead, it searches the sources you have ticked, and Google's help says naming a source in your question narrows that search further (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026). As a result, a notebook with a few well-chosen sources usually beats one stuffed with everything. That 25-million figure is our own maths from Google's two limits, not a number Google publishes. It still shows why a notebook suits a whole semester of readings, while a chat suits one long report or a handful of files.

## When are Gemini and its Deep Research the better pick?

Pick Gemini when you don't have sources yet, or when you need something made. It creates files right in the chat, including Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDF, Word, Excel and LaTeX ([Google](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/products/gemini-app/generate-files-in-gemini/), 2026). Meanwhile, its Deep Research reads the web for you, with Google Search as the default source ([Gemini Apps Help](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/15719111?hl=en), 2026). A report usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes, and you can export it to Docs. On AI Ultra, you can also get an Audio Overview of the report. Notably, Deep Research can skip the web. Deselect Google Search and it works from Gmail, Drive or a notebook you add instead (Gemini Apps Help, 2026). That's a strong way to summarize a folder in one long report. For back-and-forth questions against the same documents, however, a notebook is still the better fit.

That covers most everyday work:
- quick questions and current events
- brainstorming and a first draft
- a spreadsheet or deck built from messy notes

Gemini also has two features people often mix up with Gemini Notebook. **Gems** are saved instructions for tasks you repeat. **Notebooks in Gemini** are project folders inside the chat app, and they share sources with Gemini Notebook. Our guide to [Notebooks in Gemini and Gems](/blog/gemini-notebook-vs-notebooks-in-gemini) covers both in detail, so we won't repeat it here.

## Is Gemini Notebook better for studying and research?

Gemini Notebook wins when the answer must stay inside a known set of documents, such as literature reviews, contracts, course readings or due diligence. It also turns those sources into study material. For example, from one set of sources you can make Audio and Video Overviews, Mind Maps, Reports, Flashcards, Quizzes, Infographics and Slide Decks. In addition, quizzes can use short-answer and fill-in-the-blank questions, and Video Overviews come in a roughly 60-second short format ([Google Workspace Updates](https://workspaceupdates.googleblog.com/2026/09/new-back-to-school-features-and-learning-tools-available-in-Gemini-Notebook.html), 2026). To be fair, the Gemini app can make quizzes and flashcards as well. The difference, however, is that the notebook builds them from a fixed source set and keeps its answers tied to it. Gemini Notebook can go and find sources, too. Fast Research searches the web or your Drive, while Deep Research browses hundreds of websites. Both import the results as sources, so later answers stay tied to them (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026).

Our walkthrough of [Deep Research in Gemini Notebook](/blog/gemini-notebook-deep-research) shows the steps, and our [Gemini Notebook review](/blog/gemini-notebook-review) weighs its limits. Your best Gemini chats can become sources too, so a notebook holds what you explored as well as what you read.

## Gemini or Gemini Notebook: which should you choose?

Most people end up using both, and Google built them to connect. Google describes "full cross-app syncing" between the Gemini app and Gemini Notebook (Google, 2026). As a result, a source you add in one app shows up in the other. Claude and ChatGPT, in contrast, get no such link from Google. Our guide to [asking your notebooks from Claude or ChatGPT](/blog/gemini-notebook-in-claude) covers that route, through Kortex MCP, included with Kortex Pro and Lifetime. Here's how to split the work. You don't always have to choose, either: Gemini can ask your notebooks, create them and add sources from any chat, through the [Gemini Notebook connected app](/blog/gemini-notebook-in-gemini-app).

| If you mainly... | Choose |
|---|---|
| Ask quick questions or brainstorm | Gemini |
| Need fresh facts from across the web | Gemini, with Deep Research |
| Draft a Doc, Sheet or slides from scratch | Gemini |
| Ask questions of papers, contracts or course notes | Gemini Notebook |
| Study with flashcards, quizzes and audio reviews | Gemini Notebook |
| Need both web breadth and cited answers | Both, in that order |

<!-- [UNIQUE INSIGHT] -->
Here's a one-question test. Will anyone ask where this sentence came from? If yes, finish in Gemini Notebook, where answers point back to your sources. If you need fresh web facts or a finished file, on the other hand, finish in Gemini. Most projects run through both: explore wide in Gemini, then narrow down to sources you can cite. A simple loop looks like this:

1. Ask Gemini or run Deep Research to map the topic and spot good sources.
2. Add the best sources to a notebook, or open the synced notebook.
3. Ask the questions that need citations, and make Studio outputs.
4. Back in Gemini, turn the checked findings into a Doc, Sheet or deck.

One practical note: both apps use compute-based usage limits that refresh every five hours until a weekly cap ([Gemini Apps Help](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/16275805?hl=en), 2026). Consequently, the features and models you pick change how fast you reach the cap. Our [usage limits guide](/blog/gemini-notebook-usage-limits) explains how the limits reset and what each paid plan adds on top.

## How does Kortex carry Gemini chats into notebooks?

<!-- [ORIGINAL DATA] -->
Kortex adds an import button inside Gemini that sends the current chat to any notebook as a clean source, with your prompts and Gemini's replies labelled. We built it for a chore many people do by hand. When we analyzed 776 Kortex MCP waitlist answers from September and October 2026, we found 244 respondents, 31%, describing a manual copy-paste workaround. Gemini was also the third most named assistant in that survey, with 61 mentions, behind Claude and ChatGPT. Kortex users have run 105,000+ imports (Kortex, 2026). Send the same chat again, and Kortex updates that source instead of adding a copy. In addition, Kortex exports notebook chats as Markdown, text, PDF or JSON, and copying a chat as Markdown is free. Use it for any Gemini thread worth keeping, like a brainstorm or an explanation you want to check later against real sources.

New to it? Start with [getting started with Kortex](/blog/getting-started-with-kortex). In short, ask Gemini, verify in Gemini Notebook, and let Kortex carry the good chats across.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Gemini Notebook better than Gemini?

For questions about specific documents, yes. Gemini Notebook answers from your sources with inline citations, and in a 2025 study NotebookLM hallucinated in 13% of outputs versus about 40% for Gemini. For web answers, drafting and making files, the Gemini app is the better tool. Most people use both.

### Is Gemini Notebook better than Gemini for studying?

For studying your own readings, usually yes. A notebook answers from your course material with inline citations, and its Studio builds flashcards, quizzes, Mind Maps and Audio Overviews from that fixed set, including short-answer and fill-in-the-blank quizzes. The Gemini app can make quizzes and flashcards too, without that tie to one source set.

### Why use Gemini Notebook instead of uploading files to Gemini?

Scale and proof. A Gemini chat takes up to 10 files per prompt, while a free notebook holds 50 sources of up to 500,000 words each. Notebook answers carry inline citations, and the Studio turns the same sources into audio, video, flashcards and slides.

### Can Gemini use my Gemini Notebook notebooks?

Yes. Google says notebooks work in the Gemini app with full cross-app syncing, so a source you add in one app shows up in the other. You can also attach a notebook to a Gemini chat, or add it as a source for a Deep Research report, which usually takes 5 to 10 minutes.

### Does Gemini Notebook search the web like Gemini?

Only to find sources. In Gemini Notebook, Fast Research searches the web or your Drive, and Deep Research browses the web. Both import what they find as sources. After that, answers come from those sources. The Gemini app uses Google Search by default and shows source links on some, not all, of its answers.

### Are Gemini and Gemini Notebook free?

Both are free with a Google account. A free Gemini Notebook account gets 100 notebooks with 50 sources each, and free Gemini users get Deep Research and Gems. Paid Google AI plans raise usage limits in both apps, and those limits refresh every 5 hours until a weekly cap.
