# Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) Not Working? 9 Fixes

> NotebookLM not working? See 9 fixes for loading errors, missing notebooks, failed uploads and 'Limit reached', which has reset every 5 hours since Sept 2, 2026.

Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) had a busy few months. It changed its name and address in July, moved to new usage limits in September, and rolled out a wave of features to phones and work accounts. Each change brought its own "why is this not working?" moment. Most, however, have a quick fix. Here are nine, grouped by symptom, in the order worth trying them.

> **Key Takeaways**
> - "Limit reached" isn't a bug: limits refresh every five hours since September 2, 2026 ([Gemini Notebook Help](https://support.google.com/gemininotebook/answer/17670842?hl=en), 2026).
> - Missing notebooks usually sit in another Google account.
> - Work and school accounts need an admin to turn Gemini Notebook on.
> - Uploads fail above 500,000 words or 200MB per source.

## Why is Gemini Notebook not loading?

A 60-second test tells you whether the fault is your browser, your account or Google. Gemini Notebook runs at notebook.google.com, and since the July 16, 2026 rename, the old notebooklm.google.com address redirects there ([Google](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/products/gemini-notebook/notebooklm-gemini-notebook/), 2026). When we checked on October 1, 2026, that redirect was a permanent 301, and links to single notebooks kept their full path. In other words, an old bookmark isn't the problem. Is Google itself down? The Google Workspace Status Dashboard at google.com/appsstatus lists Gemini Notebook as its own service.

### 1. Test in a private window

Open notebook.google.com in a private (incognito) window and sign in. If it works there, the problem lives in your normal browser profile: a stale cache, a conflicting extension, or another signed-in account. In that case, clear cookies and cached files for the site, or disable extensions one at a time. Google notes that clearing cache and cookies fixes many loading and formatting problems; that said, it also signs you out of sites, so have your password ready. Fails in private too? Then try another browser or your phone. If the phone works, your computer's browser is the culprit. In contrast, if nothing works on any device, the dashboard above is the next stop. As a result, three quick tests narrow the cause to one of three places before you change a single setting.

## Why does it say "Limit reached"?

Because the limits changed. **Compute-based limits** are allowances that scale with how much work each request takes, and Gemini Notebook has used them since September 2, 2026. They refresh every five hours until a weekly cap, and at the edge you'll see "Limit reached. All features are available after 3:00 PM" (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026). That's a quota message, not an error. Specifically, Google weighs prompt complexity, chat length, the number of sources and the features you use, so one long session in a big notebook can use up the window faster than a dozen short questions. Paid plans, meanwhile, multiply the allowance: Plus gets 2x the standard and Pro 4x. In fact, the same help page shows your remaining usage under Settings, then Usage, so you can check before a deadline rather than during it.

### 2. Wait, queue or trim the request

- **Wait** until the time in the message. With five-hour windows, it's usually the same day.
- **Queue it.** On the web, use Generate later for heavy outputs like Video Overviews and Slide Decks; Google says it may take a couple of hours.
- **Ask for less.** Fewer selected sources and a fresh chat, instead of an hour-long thread, both reduce what a request costs.
- **Upgrade** if you hit the weekly cap often.

## Where did my Gemini notebooks go?

Notebooks belong to one Google account, and each free account can hold 100 of them ([Gemini Notebook Help](https://support.google.com/gemininotebook/answer/16213268?hl=en), 2026). Most "disappeared" notebooks are sitting in another account, behind a list filter, or in a shared notebook the owner stopped sharing. Deletion, in fact, is rarer than it feels in the moment.

### 3. Notebooks missing from your list

So where should you look first? Work down this list, because each step takes seconds and the first one solves most cases.
1. **Check the avatar** in the top corner. With several Google accounts in one browser, for example, the tab may have opened with a different one, since Google can apply your default account when it isn't sure which you mean.
2. **Check the list filters.** Make sure you're not looking only at notebooks you own, or only at ones shared with you.
3. **Ask the owner** about shared notebooks. If they stopped sharing or deleted one, it leaves your list.
4. **Search your library.** A long run of "Untitled notebook" entries hides things well, and our guide to [organizing 50+ Gemini notebooks](/blog/organize-notebooklm-notebooks) has a system for naming them.

Found it? Then make sure you never have to hunt like that again.

### 4. Notebooks not showing in the Gemini app

**Notebooks in Gemini** is the notebook section inside the Gemini chat app, and it has its own rollout. It launched on April 8, 2026 for Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers on the web, before reaching mobile and free users ([Google](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/products/gemini-app/notebooks-gemini-notebooklm/), 2026). Work and school accounts, meanwhile, began getting it on September 14, 2026, over up to 15 days ([Google Workspace Updates](https://workspaceupdates.googleblog.com/2026/09/notebooks-in-gemini-dedicated-workspace-for-focused-organized-work-now-for-schools-and-organizations.html), 2026). In addition, it only appears for users in a group with both Gemini and Gemini Notebook set to On, and the European Economic Area was excluded at first. There's one more catch, notably. Shared notebooks, even ones you own, don't show up in Gemini at all; you open those in Gemini Notebook as usual ([Gemini Notebook Help](https://support.google.com/gemininotebook/answer/17003757?hl=en), 2026). Consequently, a missing notebook in Gemini is often a shared one, not a lost one.

## Why is Gemini Notebook not available on my account?

It's about eligibility. Gemini Notebook works in the 180+ regions where the Gemini app is available, needs age verification in your Google Account, and on work or school accounts needs an admin to switch it on ([Gemini Notebook Help](https://support.google.com/gemininotebook/answer/16269187?hl=en), 2026). For school accounts specifically, Google says your organization "needs to have a qualifying Google Workspace for Education edition and your administrator must have enabled access to Gemini Notebook for your account" ([Google for Education](https://edu.google.com/intl/ALL_us/ai-notebooklm/), 2026). The good news for students, on the other hand, is that it costs schools nothing: Google includes it in all Workspace for Education editions free of charge. Age matters too, though. For instance, some features, including Slide Decks, Infographics and Deep Research, are limited to users over 18, so a younger account may see the app but not every button.

### 5. Check age, country and admin settings

- **Age.** Verify your age in your Google Account settings.
- **Country.** Confirm you're in a supported region. A VPN can make it look like you aren't.
- **Work or school account.** Your admin turns Gemini Notebook on in the Admin console, under Generative AI, then Gemini Notebook, then Service status ([Google Workspace Admin Help](https://knowledge.workspace.google.com/admin/generative-ai/gemini-notebook/turn-gemini-notebook-on-or-off-for-users), 2026).

Blocked on a school account? Alternatively, a personal Google account is often the fastest way to keep studying, as long as your school's rules allow it.

## Why do uploads, notes or answers fail?

Most failures trace back to documented limits. Each source can be up to 500,000 words or 200MB, copy-protected PDFs can't be imported, and deleted notes can't be recovered (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026). Answers, however, fail for a different reason: the notebook only answers from the sources you've selected.

### 6. Notes disappeared or aren't saving

Two things catch people here. First, a chat reply isn't a note; in particular, it vanishes if you clear the chat. To keep an answer, save it to a note or export the chat. Second, deletions are final. Similarly, if notes seem not to save at all, reload the page before adding more, because a session left open for days can fall out of sync.

### 7. Error uploading a source or PDF

From our research into Google's help pages while fact-checking this post, the five fixes below cover the documented reasons an import fails, plus one that's changed. Google Drive sources now update themselves every few minutes, so an old version usually just needs a manual sync ([Gemini Notebook Help](https://support.google.com/gemininotebook/answer/16215270?hl=en), 2026).
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| File over 200MB or over 500,000 words | Split it into parts, or compress the images inside a PDF. |
| Copy-protected PDF | Import an unprotected copy, if you have the rights to. |
| Notebook is full | Free notebooks hold 50 sources, so start a second notebook or remove old ones. |
| Web page imports nearly empty | Paywalled pages aren't supported, so paste the text as a source instead. |
| Google Doc shows old content | Open the source and click to sync with Google Drive. |

### 8. It won't answer, or ignores a source

Why would it skip a source you uploaded? Gemini Notebook answers only from the sources you've ticked. If a source is unticked, it's left out. As a result, if the answer isn't in your sources at all, it won't make one up. Accordingly, rephrase the question to point at a source ("In the 2024 annual report, what..."), and check the boxes. Additionally, safety filters can block sensitive topics, such as violence, even in historical material. Our [expert tips for Gemini Notebook](/blog/notebooklm-expert-tips) cover phrasing that gets cited answers.

## Not working on your phone or iPhone?

An outdated app is the usual culprit. New features reached the Android and iOS apps from September 15, 2026, including a lecture audio recorder and real-time voice conversations in nearly 100 languages for users 18 and over ([Google Workspace Updates](https://workspaceupdates.googleblog.com/2026/09/new-back-to-school-features-and-learning-tools-available-in-Gemini-Notebook.html), 2026). They need the current app version; in addition, the rollout is gradual, so a friend may see a feature days before you do. The app also has firm requirements: iOS 17 or later on iPhone and iPad, and Android 10 or later ([Gemini Notebook Help](https://support.google.com/gemininotebook/answer/16296687?hl=en), 2026). Some things never work on the phone, however. Notes, Mind Maps, Reports and Data Tables are still web-only, and Google admits syncing between devices can lag. If your list looks stale, quit the app and relaunch it, which is Google's own fix.

### 9. Update, restart, reinstall

Update the app first, then restart your phone. Still crashing? Reinstall it. Your notebooks are stored in your account, not on the phone; therefore, a reinstall doesn't lose them, though offline Audio Overviews need downloading again. More on the apps in our [Gemini Notebook app guide](/blog/notebooklm-app).

## How do you contact Gemini Notebook support?

For direct help, Google's help center lists a support address for consumer users, notebooklm-user-support@google.com, while Workspace users should contact Google Workspace support through their admin (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026). For a wrong or unsafe answer, use the thumbs-down button and pick a reason.

<!-- [ORIGINAL DATA] -->
You're not alone, either. We analyzed 1,451 Google autocomplete suggestions for Kortex blog topics in October 2026, and 37 of them came from searches like "notebooklm not working". We found "not loading", "error uploading source", "audio overview not working" and "not working on iphone" among them. That's a fair map, in other words, of what people are running into this month.

## How do you protect your work next time?

<!-- [ORIGINAL DATA] -->
Assume anything in a notebook could vanish with a mistaken click, and keep a copy you control. **Kortex** is a free Chrome extension for Gemini Notebook, and we built it with this job in mind. Its users have run 200,000+ exports so far ([Kortex](/), 2026), and the free plan covers 10 exports a day, which is plenty for backing up the notebooks that matter. One button saves every source in a notebook as PDF, Markdown, text or a ZIP. Another saves every note and Studio artifact at once. Chats, likewise, export whole or reply by reply. It works on both notebook.google.com and the old address, in Chrome and other Chromium browsers. In particular, if its buttons go missing after a Gemini Notebook update, update the extension and reload the tab. Our page on [what Kortex exports](/features#export) shows each format.

Rather keep that copy in Notion or Obsidian? Our guide to [saving Gemini Notebook notes to Notion or Obsidian](/blog/gemini-notebook-to-notion-obsidian) shows how an AI assistant can file them there through Kortex MCP, a private beta for invited Kortex Pro members. Invites go out from the [Kortex MCP waitlist](https://forms.gle/1KeSLTxQHdSwpjPV9).

Most Gemini Notebook problems take a minute to fix. Losing a notebook, by contrast, takes longer to recover from.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why is Gemini Notebook not working?

The usual causes are a usage limit, a different Google account in the tab, a work or school account where the admin hasn't turned Gemini Notebook on, and browser extensions or cached data. Limits have refreshed every five hours since September 2, 2026. A private window narrows it down fast.

### Why did my Gemini notebooks disappear?

Usually they didn't. Notebooks belong to one Google account, so check which account the tab uses. Then check whether you're looking at notebooks you own or ones shared with you. If a notebook was shared with you, the owner may have stopped sharing it or deleted it.

### Can I recover deleted notes in Gemini Notebook?

No. Google's help center says there's currently no way to recover deleted notes (Gemini Notebook Help, 2026). The only protection is a copy you made beforehand, such as a note exported to Markdown or PDF. If a notebook matters, back it up before you tidy it, not after.

### Why does Gemini Notebook say "Limit reached"?

Since September 2, 2026, Gemini Notebook uses compute-based limits that refresh every five hours until you reach a weekly cap. The message shows when features return. You can wait, queue heavy outputs with Generate later on the web, or upgrade: Plus gets twice the standard allowance, Pro four times.

### Why won't my PDF upload to Gemini Notebook?

Check its size and protection. Each source can be up to 500,000 words or 200MB, and copy-protected PDFs can't be imported. Splitting a very large file, compressing its images, or importing an unprotected copy you have the rights to usually fixes it.

### Why is Gemini Notebook not available on my account?

You may need to verify your age in your Google Account, be in one of the 180+ supported regions, or, on a work or school account, ask your admin to turn Gemini Notebook on. Some features, such as Slide Decks, are only available to users over 18.

### Is Gemini Notebook down right now?

Check the Google Workspace Status Dashboard at google.com/appsstatus, which lists Gemini Notebook as its own service. If it shows no incident, the fault is more likely on your side: open notebook.google.com in a private window, then try another browser or your phone to rule out your browser and account.
